Here’s a little fan fun for today. I’m a HUGE fan of Rebecca Sugar’s series, Steven Universe. I love it so much I will have to save how much I love it for its own post because I don’t have the energy today. It’s just awesome go see it! TL;DR awesome ladies of all shapes and sizes with crystal powers fighting to save Earth with the help of a sweet young boy who you just want to hug. Not saccharine, not sappy, just a lot of heart, good messages, great characters, and awesome music. Fun for all ages.

Rebecca Sugar, meanwhile has encouraged fans to make their own “gemsonas” or crystal gem versions of themselves.So today I humbly submit to you: Malachite.

Today’s inks were all about getting down Rebecca sugar’s own style: colour scheme, paying attention to the star detail, round flowing lines without a ton of detail, the gemstone placement, and, most importantly, to not shy away from my real body-type. Her style embraces the curves and flaws of real people, so I’ve been extra honest here with my curves.

I added colour in photoshop, because you really NEED colour on a crystal gem to make it stand out, but the ink version is below here. So, I had fun today! Later!

Here’s today’s Inktober offering. My dad always used to do the Fr. Guido Sarducci voice and routines for me and my brothers when I was younger. My brother Dave and were joking recently that he’d make a great character in a supernnatural campaign so we made a tribute character for him: Padre Vinnie Sargento. Mmm. Vintage cheese.

Today’s another illustration for the Skeleton Crew RPG. This one is the ghost of a silent film star comedian. I was inspired to draw on my favorite actors like, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, Charlie Chaplin, and there’s a bit of Groucho Marx thrown in there for good measure. In the end he looks a bit like one of those Red Skelton sad clown paintings, but I tried to emphasize the soulful tortured eyes that all the silent comedians had.

Inktober twofer

I missed yesterday’s post due to force majeur so today I’m posting a two-fer. These are both character illustrations for the upcoming Skeleton Crew RPG book character creation section for ready-to-plays. The first is a Jacobean scardey-cat called “Headless Hob.” I approached him as sort of a “Canterville Ghost” meets Scooby Doo villain and he came out looking darling. The next is rougher and more visceral. It’s supposed to be an ancient Celtic warrior wight. I was inspired by the traitor ghosts in Return of the King. I think it would read a lot better with a black background or some other finessing. In retrospect this was a hard one to do with just ink. Anyway. More tomorrow. Bye!

Inktober Day 16

Today I’m busy with a sick kid, so I gave myself a timed challenge to see how quickly I could draw Linus. I did this complete with pencils underneath in about 7 minutes.

Linus is an OLD friend of mine, so I’m starting to really memorize his features to the point where drawing him is almost automatic. It’s very rare that I have a handle on a character like that, since consistency is one of my biggest hurdles. That’s all for today, bye!

Inktober Day 15

Now I’m in a zombie mood. Last “Free Comic Book Day,” a kid asked me to draw a zombie, so I whipped out my sharpie and drew some hasty grotesque lines into a great zombie. A few kids saw his zombie and wanted more so I drew a fair few that day. Today, I wanted to see if I could do it again, so armed only with a sharpie and no pencils, I tried to do a zombie scene using rough lines and suggestive shadow. I went over it with a white liner pen to give the grass some depth, but only a smidge here and there. This is almost entirely a free-hand scene. I’m really happy with it.

Inktober Day 14

Here’s Day 14’s ink. I did a Pugicorn/Pugasus . I just wanted the fun of drawing a pug (one of my FAVORITE dog breeds) running at full tilt. I love how manic their eyes look, I love how their limbs just seem to flap in midair. I love the tongue and the curly tail. This was just plain fun to draw. 🙂 I’ll probably even scan this guy properly and colour him in.

I think his face came out a little longer than I wanted but it’s quite possible I was holding the paper at two low and angle, which tends to stretch things out. I also got some good use out of my chisel today and used my favorite “eerie clouds” technique for the background. I developed a taste for it while reading Inu Yasha back in the day. Today I wanted to get to know my fine-liner more intimately so I decided to do something with a lot of textures, patterns and delicate shading. I also want to put more than 3 minutes into it like on my last couple of days. So this week is a little fancier:

Dreaming of the Lily Maid, by Monica Marier available $40

I always wanted to do a picture of Anne Shirley. The Anne of Green Gables book series is continually one of my favorites, and every few years or so I have to pull out my entire collection and read them again. For this picture I wanted to concentrate on getting the fine details down pat, like her print dress, her cabled sweater, he braids and her freckles, and all the shading that required. I’m very happy with the results. See you all tomorrow! 🙂
